Rheonics Inline Density and Viscosity Meter SRD
What is the purpose of this article?
To give an overview of the Slimline Probe - SLP (-X6) version of the SRD sensor and installation information.
1. Overview
The slimline probe (SLP) design for the SRD sensor is a long insertion probe with a body diameter of 19mm, which is the main difference from a standard long insertion sensor (-X5) that has a 30mm diameter. Its order code is -X6.
This 19mm diameter body opens up the possibility of using more process connections of smaller sizes. This is well suited for installations in small lines, tanks or vessels, and bioreactors or reactors where available connections are small and the standard long insertion probe does not fit (due to the 30 mm diameter). The slim design also creates small pressure drops in smaller ID lines.
Some connections suitable for the SRD-X6 are 1” NPT, 3/4” NPT, Ingold, Tri-Clamp, and others.
The SRD-SLP (-X6) is a long insertion probe so the insertion length A and process connection B should be defined by user upon order.

Rheonics offers the slimline design with compression fittings for flexible insertion length and without a process connection too. Visit the SRD-X7 Reactor Probe for more information. |
With the Slimline Probe there are many installation advantages. Some installation scenarios of this sensor variant are:
- Installation in small pipelines (e.g. 3/4“, 1”, 1.25” ID pipes)
- Installation with small process connections: Ingold DN25, 1” NPT, 3/4” NPT.
- Installation in reactors and bioreactors
- Installation in pipe with less effect on the cross section reduction inside the pipe (compared to -X5 sensors as shown in next figure) → low/no pressure drop

2. Installation principles
The Rheonics density and viscosity meter SRD-X6 is based on the same resonator used for other SRD variants. So the installation requirements are the same for all SRD sensors. Next image shows the basic installation criterias.

An additional recomendation for the Rheonics SRD, is to have the tip aligned with the flow. This is only relevant for perpendicular installation in pipes. Explore what it means here. |
3. Configuration examples
The SRD-X6 Slimline probe can be configured with customizable insertion length and process connection. Some configuration examples are listed below.
- 3/4” NPT Thread: Common NPT thread also available in short variant SRD-X1-34N. Rheonics offers 3/4" NPT weldolet for installation. Connection code is -B34N. Smaller threads are available as long as they can be welded on the 19mm OD body.

- Ingold DN25: It is mostly used in reactor applications. Process connection code is -BI25. Review more about this configuration here.

- Tri-Clamp D34: Tri Clamp is used in hygienic installations for food, pharmaceutical and other industries. The SRD-X6 can be ordered with Tri Clamp sizes from ∅34 mm (equivalent to ISO 1127 DN20) up. Process connection code for D34 is: -B34T.

4. Installation examples
Installation in Elbow Pipe: An installation in an elbow with the fluid flowing past the sensing element axially is often a recommended scenario. The SR-SLP variants are well suited for this installation since their ∅19mm diameter allows a minimum pressure drop in line.

Installation in small reactor: Small metal or glass reactors can have limited space and requires the use of small process connections. The SRD-X6 can be used in these conditions to measure density, viscosity and temperature inline as in the next example, using an Ingold DN25 connection for installation on the lid. We do not recommend use or SRD_SLP probes when bubbles and inhomogenity is expected in the fluid due to the mixing stator or fluid conditions. Seek advise from Rheonics Application Engineering team on your fluid and application if you expect to use the sensors where fluid or operational conditions can cause bubbles in flow or inhomogenity due to movement of fluid.
