What products are involved?
Rheonics Inline Viscometer SRV
What is the purpose of this article?
To give an overview of the Slimline Probe - SLP (-X6) version of the SRV sensor and installation information.

1. Overview

The Rheonics Simline (SLP) variant, for the viscometer SRV, is a long probe configurable in insertion length and process connection. It has a body diameter of 19mm, which is the main difference from a standard long insertion sensor (-X5) that has a 30mm diameter. The SRV-SLP is used inline to monitor real-time viscosity and temperature readings. Its configuration code is -X6.

The SRV-X6 19mm diameter body opens up the possibility of using more process connections of small sizes. This is well suited for installations in small tanks or vessels and in small lines, creating less pressure drops. Installation is also possible in bioreactor tanks and glass reactors.

Some process connections of interest for the SRV-X6 are 1” NPT, 3/4” NPT, Ingold DN25, Tri-Clamp, and others.

Since the SR-SLP sensors are long insertion probes, the client should define the Insertion Length A and the Process Connection B.

Rheonics also offers a 19 mm diameter variant with no connection or with a compression fitting for a customizable insertion length, see more here SRV-X7 Reactor Probe.

With the Slimline Probe there are many installation advantages. Some installation scenarios of this sensor variant are:

  • Installation in small pipelines (e.g. 1”, 1.25” ID pipes)
  • Installation with reduced connections: Ingold DN25, 1” NPT, 3/4” NPT.
  • Installation in reactors and bioreactors
  • Installation in pipe sizes bigger than 1.5” with less effect on the cross section reduction inside the pipe (compared to -X5 sensors as in next figure).

2. Installation principles

The Rheonics SRV-X6 Slimline requires the next installation criterias to be followed to ensure accurate, repeatable and reproducible viscosity readings.

3. Configuration examples

Some examples of possible configurations for the SRV-SLP sensor are shown below:

3/4” NPT Thread: This connection is offered by Rheonics with the short SRV (SRV-X1-34N) too. Using an SRV-SLP probe would allow for a longer customizable insertion as in next figure. Process connection code is -B34N.

Ingold DN25: This is a connection designed by Mettler Toledo. It can be used in bioreactor applications.  Process connection code is -BI25. Review more about this configuration here.

DIN 11851 Sanitary DN 40: Connection used for hygienic applications and easy disassembly. Common in food and beverage industries. Process connection code is: -BH40.

Tri-Clamp D34: Tri Clamp is used in hygienic installations for food, pharmaceutical and other industries. The SRV-SLP can be ordered with Tri Clamp sizes from ∅34 mm (equivalent to ISO 1127 DN20) up. Process connection code for D34 is: -B34T.

4. Installation examples

Installation in Elbow Pipe: An installation at an elbow with the fluid hitting the sensing element axially is the ideal and most recommended scenario for Rheonics sensors. The SR-SLP variants are well suited for this installation since their ∅19mm diameter allows a minimum pressure drop in line.

Installation in small reactor: Small reactors such as a glass reactor has limited space and requires the use of small process connections. The SRV-X6 can be used in these conditions to measure viscosity and temperature inline. Next example uses an Ingold DN25 connection for installation at top of a glass reactor lid.
