Rheonics Inline Viscometer SRV and Density and Viscosity meter SRD.
What is the purpose of this article?
To give an overview of the Teletube version of the SRV and SRD sensor and installation information.
1. Overview
Rheonics viscometer SRV and density meter and viscometer SRD sensors have a Teletube variant. The Teletube is a long insertion probe based on a short probe and extension tubes that are easily assembled on-site by the final user without weldings. This allows for a customizable insertion and total length of the probe, easier delivery and handling of the probe. Learn how to assemble the SR-Teletube here.
This variant is convenient mostly in applications that require an ultra-long (longer than 600 mm) insertion depth, since the sensor probe can be delivered in smaller parts that the user can easily assemble. Probe assembly can be fixed using a thread locker glue or planned for later disassembly. The Teletube variant is also useful for early tests with smaller insertion lengths.
The Teletube assembly is composed of the parts shown below. At the fluid end, it requires the Teletube probe version of the SRV or SRD (SRV-TT or SRD-TT). At the other end, it has two end-variants, the cable gland end (SRx-TT-CAB) and the SME TR(D) end (SRx-TT-TR) in which the sensor electronics are mounted on the probe.

For the SRV and SRD Teletube variants, the user should define the process connection, total length (optional), and insertion length of the probe.
The Teletube variant can be complemented with the APC accessory, which enables a flexible process connection and insertion length. See more in the sections below or visit the APC page here. |

With the SR- Teletube there are many installation advantages. Some installation scenarios of this sensor variant are:
- Simplify the assembly and reduce the costs of using an ultra-long insertion length.
- Installation in big reactors, tanks, or pipes.
- The Probe length can be easily modified to adjust the probe to different applications.
2. When to use the long insertion -X5 version of the probe and when to select the Teletube version?
Property | -X5 Probe | -TT probe |
Maximum Pressure | 100 bar (1500 psi) | Low Pressure |
Maximum Temperature | Above 200 °C (400 °F) | Low Temperature |
Probe length and Insertion length | Maximum length 1 meter. | Suitable for installations longer than 500 mm. |
Process connections | Any and hygienic versions available. | Not suitable for hygienic applications. |
Assembly | Single body probe which is ready for installation. | This probe has to be assembled by the customer. O-rings are required for the threaded joints. |
Customization | Customizable but not variable after order. | Customizable and variable* after order. |
* When the sensor needs to be disassembled, then you can assemble the Teletube sensor without the TLG, and only apply TLG when permanent configuration is fixed. TLG is reworkable in some cases - check the TLG is appropriate for your use case and process fluid.
3. Installation principles
The Rheonics SR-TT probes require the next installation criteria to be followed to ensure accurate, repeatable, and reproducible viscosity and/or density readings.

4. Configuration examples
Some examples of possible configurations for the SRV and SRD Teletube variants sensor are shown below:
The customer has to specify the process connection (Norm and Size), for the order code prefix B can be defined as BXXX and Rheonics will define that in the order. |
1.25” NPT Thread: NPT stands for National Pipe Thread, a standard from North America used for tapered threads that are used in our Rheonics Type-SR sensor probes. There are different NPT thread sizes like 3/4”, 1/2”, 1”, 1 1/4”, etc. The Teletube probes are compatible with NPT 1.25” and bigger sizes. Using an SR-TT probe allows a longer customizable length as in the next figure which uses an NPT 1.25”. Process connection code for this thread size is -B1N25.
Other thread norms like M, G, and PG are compatible with the Teletube probe variant as long as the minimum ID is 30 mm |

Flanges: This connection has different norms available, depending on the region, like ANSI/ASME B16.5, DIN 2527, JIS B2220, and BS/EN1092. The user should define the norm, size, and all relevant information to specify the flange required. The next example shows a 150lb - 2” flange ANSI/ASME B16.5. Process connection code is BA20A.

Tri-Clamp D50.5: Tri-Clamp is used in hygienic installations for food, pharmaceutical, and other industries. The SRV Teletube probes can be ordered with Tri-Clamp sizes from ∅50.5 mm (equivalent to ISO 1127 DN32) and up. The next example shows a Tri-Clamp ∅64 mm (2”) process connection code for it is: -B20T. You can learn more about TC compatibility here.

Adaptable Process Connector (APC): The SR-TT with the APC process connection is the best choice to make the installation fully customizable. The APC is a process connection system that allows to place a flange on the probe and move it along the shaft to suit different application needs. Teletube allows the change of the probe length easily and the APC can change the insertion length to suit the customer installation. The APC also allows different interchangeable process connections (e.g. flange, tri-clamp) as long as the thickness of the connections is less than 1”. You can learn more about the APC here, and see an assembly’s example below.

5. Installation examples
Installation in Tank: The common installation of the SR-TT is in a big tank due to the necessary insertion length to have the sensing element fully submerged in the fluid and ensure the highest accuracy on the readings. The next example uses a Flange B16.5 - 2” connection at the top and the side of the tank.
