What is the purpose of this article?
This article describes the SME-TRD display from Rheonics process inline viscosity and density sensors. used for realtime local visualization of measurements, sensor and communication status. Display’s components, configuration steps and basic troubleshooting are explained.
What products are involved?
This information is valid for all sensor variants using the SME-TRD (E1) sensor electronics.

Rheonics Sensor Local Display of SME-TRD

Rheonics inline viscosity and density sensors can be ordered with a local display included in the electronics SME-TRD variant (E1 electronics order code). This local display allows  visualization of measurements, as well as sensor and communication status through text and LED indicators.

Display features:

  • Up to three real-time measurement at a glance: Up to three of the available sensor measured parameters can be shown. By default these are viscosity, density and temperature.
  • Measurement units: Users should specify the required units prior ordering. In case unit changes are needed, contact Rheonics Support Team at [email protected]
  • Refresh time of seconds
  • Troubleshooting indicators: Through visual text and LEDs
  • Bluetooth LE available: SME-TRD allows BLE communication (C5 communication order code).
  • Remote installation thanks to cable or direct integration to probe: SME-TRD with display can either be installed far from the probe’s installation in line or tank, or directly mounted on the probe (FT setup).

Display Elements

Figure 1 shows the SME-TRD and display with the main parts labeled. In addition to the display, a total of 6 LED indicators are used to provide information to user. Upper 4 LEDs are named Status Indicators, below them is the LCD display. On the left side of the display is the Process LED, while on the right it is the Bluetooth LED. Next tables review them in detail.

Table 2: Rheonics SME-TRD display information

ElementDescription
Sensor State

Displays Sensor status. Status list are next, potential solutions are given in parenthesis.

Running: Sensor readings are normal

Error: Sensor configuration issue (connect to RCP software and verify errors. Download -P and -A log files and share with Rheonics Support Team)

Unstable: Not reliable reading (verify the sensor probe’s sensing element is fully on fluid and not obstructed by unwanted material e.g. deposits, dead zones, etc. Refer to sensor manual for more information)

Unlocked: The sensor is not locking properly to a measurement value (verify the probe is not obstructed by unwanted material)

Unavailable: Communication between electronics and display is not available (verify internal wiring)

Process state

Displays process status

Out of range: Sensor readings are outside the measuring range (verify sensor measurement range is not exceed, contact Rheonics Support Team for help)

Within limits Sensor readings are inside the measuring range

Real-time measurement lines
Each line displays the parameter name abbreviated, followed by the current value and corresponding unit
Sensor information
Displays serial number, Firmware version and IP address of the sensor.

Display measurement lines configuration

The three real-time measurement lines can be selected through the Rheonics Control Panel software while connected through Ethernet or USB communication.

To modify the the displayed parameters, follow the instructions below or see the video tutorial: How to change parameters in Rheonics SME-TRD LCD display?

  1. Open the Rheonics Control Panel (RCP) software.
  2. Connect sensor to RCP software.
  3. Navigate to the Communication Tab, "LCD Display (SME-TRD Only)" section.

Figure 3: RCP Communication Tab.

3. In the "Parameter" dropdowns, select the parameter you want to display on each of the three measurement lines.

4. Adjust the "Resolution" settings as needed for your preferences.

Figure 4: RCP LCD Display lines configuration

5. Once you have configured the display settings to your preferences, use the "Write Config" button to save the changes, wait for the button to turn green. The "Load Config" button allows you to reload any previously saved configurations.

Units displayed on the SME-TRD are specified in the sensor order and can not be changed from RCP software. Contact Rheonics Support Team for later change of units.

For detailed instructions on navigating the Rheonics Control Panel software, please refer to the user manual.

Common Troubleshooting

Table 3: Rheonics display potential issues and solutions

IssuePossible solution
Display does not turn on BUT SME electronics turn on correctly

Check Wiring between display and SME electronics:

For flex cable connection: Verify cable is not damaged or loose. Verify the connection orientation is correct.

For pin connections: Verify the pins are making good contact, SME-TRD housing should be correctly threaded and sealed. Check detailed instructions here Transmitter Display Module installation instructions (SME-TRD)

If it does not work, check that the Electronics unit is powering up and working properly.

Check included Installation Manual instructions. and this article.
